The origin of Valentine’s Day is full of legends and mysteries. You can do a quick search online and find many stories. But the most believed one is that St. Valentine was a priest who attracted the disfavor of Roman emperor Claudius II around 270. Claudius II had prohibited marriage for young men, claiming that bachelors made better soldiers. Valentine continued to secretly perform marriage ceremonies but was eventually apprehended by the Romans and put to death. Another legend has it that Valentine, imprisoned by Claudius, fell in love with the daughter of his jailer. Before he was executed, he allegedly sent her a letter signed “from your Valentine.” February 14th was the day of the priest’s death.

In Brazil, a similar holiday is celebrated on June 12th. It is called Dia dos Namorados. Couples gift each other and celebrate love. The day was set by a business man who learned about Valentine’s Day in America and needed to improve his business. He then decided to bring the celebration to Brazil on a time of the year where there were no major commercial dates.

At EABH, students from different grades made cards to distribute to family and friends. Student Council created a fundraising campaign and sold cards, chocolate and serenades.
