MESSAGE FROM THE INTERIM UPPER SCHOOL PRINCIPAL

Welcome to the Upper School at Escola Americana de Belo Horizonte. I am Gustav Helman, Interim Upper School Principal and MYP Coordinator.

At our Upper School, we have an outstanding group of students, an experienced and caring group of IB and AP educators, and a supportive parent community, all of us working together to engage your child in academics, sports, and extracurricular activities. After all, as we like to say, “it takes a village to raise a child”.

The Upper School at EABH comprises the Middle School (grades 6-8) and the High School (grades 9-12). Our curriculum is designed to encourage students to engage in inquiry and self-directed learning and to pursue their own interests and talents, developing their ability to think and express themselves creatively and critically. Students are challenged to seek connections across disciplines, to integrate their learning, and to value the process of intellectual discovery and artistic creativity.

In the Upper School, we offer the IB Middle Years Programme from grades 6 to 10, as well as Advanced Placement courses approved by The College Board for grades 9 to 12. Students may graduate with the Brazilian diploma, the American diploma, and the AP Capstone diploma.

As a school that is accredited by College Board, Cognia, and the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) our diploma is recognized and accepted by top universities in Brazil and overseas. We are also accredited by the Secretaria de Educação de Minas Gerais.

Our Mission Statement, “Empowering compassionate agents for a better future”, is about taking action in responsible ways. Student-led initiatives are one of our greatest strengths, and they support a school climate that fosters independence and develops creativity amongst our student leaders: Student Council, Model United Nations (MUN), National Honor Society (NHS), Global Issues Network (GIN), are just a few of the extracurricular activities that students can join at EABH.

We have a strong Community & Service program that encourages students to engage with the outside world developing an awareness of their role within the community.

Sports is an integral part of our programme. Our EABH Hawks participate regularly in tournaments, developing not only good sportsmanship, but also high levels of camaraderie among the students.

We are looking forward to welcoming you here at Escola Americana de Belo Horizonte.
