According to the Pi Day website, “Pi Day is celebrated on March 14 (3/14) around the world. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159. Pi has been calculated to over one trillion digits beyond its decimal point. As an irrational and transcendental number, it will continue infinitely without repetition or pattern. While only a handful of digits are needed for typical calculations, Pi’s infinite nature makes it a fun challenge to memorize, and to computationally calculate more and more digits.”
At EABH, we celebrate this fun day by challenging the students to memorize the most Pi digits. This year, the student Laura B., from Grade 10, broke the school record and memorized 225 digits! Congratulations Laura!
Math teachers, Mr. B and Mrs. Bueno conducted a survey so all upper school students could choose an employee to get a pie in the face. Laura B., and runner up Nazareno C., who memorized 221 digits, got to throw the whipped cream pie in Mr. Jason and Mr. Dave’s faces. At least, these teachers got to share a really nice chocolate pie afterwards.
